Keep your baby’s ear above his mouth, so fluid will not enter the Eustachian tubes. This means holding your baby upright at approximately a 45+ degree angle. As your child grows, he can be increasingly upright. This is crucial for bottle-fed babies. If your bottle-fed baby is positioned at 45 to 90 degrees to the horizon (Earth), then your bottle can be held even with the horizon (straight, not tipped up or down), so gravity does not make the liquid flow too fast. This process fits with paced (baby-led) bottle-feeding.

Use paced (baby-led) bottle-feeding, which has some similarity to breastfeeding practices.226 The Breastfeeding Mother’s Guide to Making More Milk (2009), a book by Diana West and Lisa Marasco, contains detailed information on paced (baby-led) bottle-feeding.227 You will also find videos online demonstrating this process. Your lactation consultant (preferably an IBCLC) can help you learn this technique.
